Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith, who signed with the team this past offseason, could have very well been suiting up for the New England Patriots this year. The two teams square off Saturday with the winner moving on to play in the AFC Championship, and despite some vetting to try to snag the veteran wide receiver this offseason, the Patriots will be tasked with trying to slow him down.
As a first-time free agent this past offseason, Smith admitted to being a little unsure as to how to go about it. Going with his gut lead him to Baltimore, which beat the Patriots to the punch, and he helped lead the Ravens back to the playoffs and within one game of the AFC championship.
Despite several attempts and a lot of interest bring expressed on behalf of the Patriots to try to acquire Smith, he and the Ravens were the perfect fit for one another. The receiver has shattered expectations this season, and will look to continue to do so in the playoffs. In Smith’s 14th season (and first not in a Carolina Panthers uniform), the veteran wide receiver lead the Ravens in receptions with 79, yards with 1065, and added six touchdowns.
Add to that five receptions and 101 yards receiving in the Ravens’ playoff victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, and it’s safe to say that the Patriots will have their work cut out for them trying to contain the receiver.
It’s interesting to imagine just what this year would have looked like for the Patriots and Smith had the two parties reached an agreement, but he found a home in Baltimore and both parties have to be happy with the marriage.
