Sometimes when a player is incredibly good but has too many off the field issues, it’s best to just keep them out of mind. The New York Jets are in an interesting situation heading into this offseason with a huge question mark concerning their quarterbacks. There is no guarantee Michael Vick will be around, and Geno Smith is clearly not the answer. Both quarterbacks played terrible this past season and lacked the consistency required to be a franchise kind of quarterback the Jets desperately need.

While it’s expected that the Jets will surely want to answer their quarterback issues through free agency, they might take another route and use their 6th first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft for a quarterback. While anything can happen between now and then, one quarterback that many analysts predict will still be available when the Jets are on the clock is Jameis Winston.

Winston is without question extremely talented on the field but truth of the matter is, he’s too much of a risk to take due to his off the field antics. Whether it’s all the allegations, stealing or the major misconduct he has done over the past few years, the Jets need to stay far away from him.

The Jets are in a very critical rebuilding phase, as they are building the pieces needed to be a contender again. They are still searching for the right general manager and head coach to help bring better leadership to the team and eventually will need to do the same for an established quarterback.

Drafting Winston would be a huge mistake by the Jets, because it would only regress the franchise backwards, and not forward. Many would rather they get someone established like Brian Hoyer, Jay Cutler or even Christian Ponder for that matter before bringing in what will be a debacle of a player in Winston.

Whether many believe it or not, he will be the Johnny Football of this upcoming draft. There is too much media attention around him, and not to mention all the baggage he brings to the team. Drafting Winston would also bring many distractions towards his future off the field antics that will surely come with him. He will surely let the fame get to him and put more effort into doing dumb things rather than evolving as an NFL quarterback.

Overall, the Jets need to head in the right direction and Winston wouldn’t bring that to the table. If things got that out of hand at Florida State, one can only imagine what kind of problems would arise should he be the next quarterback of the Jets in the biggest sports market in the world. It’s in the best interest of the Jets to stay far away from him, and either trade the pick, or go after someone else that won’t bring all the headaches Winston would unleash.
