It’s been a bumpy ride for the New York Jets over the past few years and now they need someone to steer them in the right direction.

It was announced on Sunday that the Jets and Mike Maccagnan have agreed to a deal that will make him the team’s new general manager. For those that don’t know, Maccagnan was the Houston Texans college scout last season, so luckily he has a strong background in evaluating talent unlike the Jets ex-GM John Idzik. Maccagnan has been in New Jersey for the last three days before the team inked him to a deal, so the writing was on the wall.

With Maccagnan at the helm, the Jets can finally start evaluating talent and bring in the right pieces to fit their current team.

Many around the league call Maccagnan a “good talent evaluator” and he was a piece of the Texans’ front office that drafted the great J.J. Watt in 2011, so he does have that great pick on his resume.

Like any candidate, it’s more about what Maccagnan can do for the Jets more than what he did for the Texans.

I think that Maccagnan is a step in the right direction for the Jets and his scouting background played a big role in the Jets’ interest. On the personality side, Maccagnan is stern and a no-nonsense guy, which is a nice change. The Jets need to change their identity and it starts with the front office. Long gone is the fun, relaxing personality of Rex Ryan and now it’s time to get down to business.

Now that the GM is in place, the next big question is the head coach. All sources point to Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as the Jets next head coach. Quinn is no lock to sign with the Jets, but all signs point to strong mutual interest on both sides and a deal may be made when/if the Seahawks lose in the playoffs.

Change is beginning for the Jets and it’s not a moment overdue.
