Chicago Bears Interested In John Fox For Good Reasons

The Denver Broncos decided to part ways with head coach John Fox, which set off a firestorm in the head-coaching carousel. It has been revealed that the Chicago Bears are very interested in Fox. That is why they will be the first to interview him. Despite many not believing it to be a good fit, the reality is he could do wonders for the Bears.

In four years with the Broncos, Fox compiled a 46-18 record, which included four consecutive AFC West titles. Sure, his record in the postseason over that span was 2-3, and that is why he was fired. Even so, he made sure a team loaded with talent got the best of their abilities. That is exactly what a great coach is supposed to do.

The knock on Fox is that he is incapable of lighting a fire under a team and is too afraid to take gambles when it is necessary. Even if the latter is true, I do not buy into the first part. Lighting a fire under the Broncos, at least during the regular season, is exactly what Fox did. The Bears have an incredibly talented roster on offense, but they accomplished close to nothing with it. The same could have happened to Denver. However, Fox made sure the team was always striving for greatness. That is how the Broncos were able to win four straight division titles.

What it comes down to is what Chicago wants from a head coach. Obviously, it has to be the right pick for first-year general manager Ryan Pace because it will essentially be his legacy. Even though every general manager gets the one screw up when it comes to hiring a head coach, the Bears do not have that freedom going forward after the embarrassment that occurred in 2014. Pace needs to make the right choice right off the bat.

I believe going with Fox would be the intelligent decision. He has more experience than any other candidate does, he has coached in two Super Bowls and he has the career record to solidify any doubts. Sure, he had Peyton Manning for four years, which always makes a coach’s résumé look that much better. With that said, Fox also coached up Jake Delhomme and Tim Tebow, both of whom were not superstar quarterbacks.

What Fox will give the Bears is a great opportunity to reach the Super Bowl, assuming they buy into what he sells. Despite there being no guarantees Chicago will become champions in the next four years, Fox will at least give them the best chance at winning their first title in 30 years.
