Dallas Cowboys Make Right Call Giving Jason Garrett 5-Year Contract Extension

Even though it took longer than Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys expected, head coach Jason Garrett made good on his hiring by reaching the playoffs in his fourth year with the team. It is true that the Cowboys’ season came to an abrupt and disappointing end in the NFC divisional round, but at least the team showed enough potential to give Jones a vote of confidence in his coach. For that reason, Garrett on the verge of receiving a five-year contract extension is absolutely the right call.

Unlike what John Elway is doing with the Denver Broncos by firing head coach John Fox, Jones understands that Garrett has made tremendous progress with the Cowboys since becoming the head coach. Not renewing his contract, which essentially would be firing him, is not going to do Dallas any favors. If anything, it would set them back a few more years, which is the complete opposite of what Jones has been trying to accomplish over the past decade.

After finishing 8-8 in Garrett’s first three seasons, the Cowboys finally busted through the wall and unleashed their full potential in 2014. A 12-4 record and Garrett’s first postseason win was the result. Unfortunately, the Green Bay Packers put an end to what could have been a magical season, especially since Dallas was convinced they had the right formula to defeat the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game.

The good news is the Cowboys should be a very similar team next season, which should be accompanied by similar success. More importantly, they will remain the class of the NFC East.

Who knows, a year from now people could be talking about how Dallas used this season as a learning tool for their great accomplishments in 2015. Of course, that all starts with Garrett, who has clearly become well respected by the men around him.
