Hiring a hot coordinator is always a crapshoot, because head coach and coordinator are two separate jobs. But the New York Jets made a great head coaching hire in Todd Bowles simply because he has proven to be a great leader and learned under some of the best, including Bill Parcells, Andy Reid and Bruce Arians. Here are five other reasons why he will be a great head coach with the Jets.

When forced into spot duty as an interim coach with the Miami Dolphins in 2011, Bowles went 2-1 as a head coach proving he could make the toughest decisions under fire holding the clipboard on game day. The Dolphins were a dysfunctional team that year without him, so he should have no problem turning around the dysfunctional Jets.

Bowles played defensive back for eight seasons in the NFL, so he can relate to today’s players. Bowles, 51, is the same age as the Eagles’ Chip Kelly, who got rid of a great talent in DeSean Jackson without replacing the production. Bowles knows that part of the duty of a head coach is to work with and nurture great talent, not to give up on it.

Bowles spent the last two seasons as the right-hand man of this year’s NFL Coach of the Year in Bruce Arians, and in reality, Arians should have won the award for three straight years. What Arians does is get the most out of his personnel. By osmosis alone, Bowles should bring the same kind of success to the Jets.

Bowles has spent a long time establishing NFL contacts in the coaching realm and should have no problem putting together a capable staff. Todd McNair, a former offensive assistant under Pete Carroll for a national championship USC team, would be a good start, but Bowles could also bring a great defensive coordinator with him in Nick Rapone, the current DB coach with the Arizona Cardinals. Rapone’s daughter goes to college in Philadelphia.

When the Jets got a sixth-round pick out of Temple University in 1977, they did not expect much but what they got was the greatest defensive lineman in their history in Joe Klecko. In Muhammad Wilkerson, another Temple product, they have their best defensive player today. The word Owl in the middle of Temple grad Bowles’ name means more good luck for Jets fans.
