As much as the St. Louis Rams are dreaming of Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston falling to their No. 10 selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, the odds of that actually transpiring are slim to none with the QB-needy teams picking in the top five. With that disclaimer out of the way, it only makes sense that the Rams continue the process they started last offseason of retooling their aging and porous offensive line. Brandon Scherff would be a terrific and versatile addition to further that effort.

Although it’s clearly not the sexy pick to take a 6-foot-5, 320-pound mauler out of Iowa in the top 10, this type of selection would solidify the notion that general manager Les Snead is building this roster the right way for long-term success. Scherff is a big and powerful lineman who also has the functional quickness needed to get to the second level as well as pass drop. With Jake Long likely a cap casualty due to injuries and an enormous salary, this selection clearly makes the most sense for the Rams.

With Greg Robinson from last year and Rodger Saffold also locked in as long-term solutions in the trenches, Scherff would add an extra layer of insurance for whomever is playing quarterback in St. Louis next season. It doesn’t make sense to reach for a substandard QB at No. 10 overall if the value isn’t there, so the safest option is the likely route for the organization. There is sure to be a value pick available to fill the signal-caller void in the later rounds of the draft.

The type of impact Scherff would have on the Rams would be immediate, with both the running and passing games standing to benefit. Tre Mason had an explosive debut season, and with another big body opening lanes for him, there’s no reason why his sophomore campaign can’t be even more impressive. And with more time for the still undetermined QB to survey the field, guys like Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin figure to benefit with more deep completions.

So while it may not be the sexiest selection ever, the Rams should go with another big body in the 2015 draft to reinforce their offensive line. Scherff would be an instant starter next season, and that’s what every team is looking for in Round 1 of the draft.
