Going into 2015, the Baltimore Ravens have a few key veterans that they'll need to keep around. If Baltimore can't re-sign them all to extended contracts, the franchise tag could be a possibility for these five players.

He’s not flashy at all, but Owen Daniels is a reliable target underneath for Joe Flacco. The odds of him being franchised are pretty small, though. He’s not better than Dennis Pitta and the possibility of drafting Devin Funchess is, I think, too tempting for the Ravens to pass up.

From journeyman to savior, Justin Forsett enjoyed his best season this year in Gary Kubiak’s rushing attack. With the uncertainty of whether Bernard Pierce or Lorenzo Taliaferro can be starting backs, keeping Forsett becomes all the more important. I think the Ravens will keep him, but the franchise tag would be the last ditch effort.

Justin Tucker is easily one of the best kickers in the league, and with a position that can single-handedly win or lose you games, having the best is a luxury. Like Forsett, I think the Ravens will keep Tucker around and the franchise tag will be the final option. Tucker’s great and all, but the Ravens might seriously need to tag one of the next two players…

Steve Smith isn’t getting any younger, and Torrey Smith stepped up his game in 2014 with 11 touchdowns. He’s only gone over 1,000 yards once in his career so far, but the truth is the offense takes a huge hit if Smith leaves town. The franchise tag here isn’t ideal but it might be needed. The Ravens need to start building a strong offense and not just replace it.

Excellent pass rushers are so scarce in the NFL, and Pernell McPhee handed in a stellar 2014 season in both sacks and quarterback pressures. Even though Elvis Dumervil and Terrell Suggs are still around, they’re going to start declining sooner rather than later and McPhee would definitely help ease those pains. With Baltimore’s emphasis on a strong defense, tagging McPhee is probably the most realistic option.
