DeVante Parker Makes Most Sense for Kansas City Chiefs in 2015 NFL Draft

Parker Makes Most Sense For Chiefs In 2015 Draft
Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs accomplished something this season that hadn’t been done since 1964 — they became just the third team in NFL history to go through a season without a wide receiver catching a touchdown pass. Couple this with the fact that veteran wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is a prime candidate to get cut due to his $10.75 million salary in 2015 and that no wide receiver besides him caught more than 16 passes last season and it becomes readily apparent that the Chiefs are in dire need of help at wide receiver.

Unless they make a big splash and trade up in the draft to select Amari Cooper, they are going to have to settle for the best receiver that falls to them at pick 18, which will likely be DeVante Parker.

Parker’s stock took a hit when he broke the fifth metatarsal in his left foot in August and missed the Louisville Cardinals‘ first seven games, but he came back with a vengeance. In just six games this season, he caught 43 passes for 855 yards and five touchdowns after finishing 10th in the FBS in touchdown catches in 2013 with 12. He has amazing body control given his 6-foot-3, 211-pound frame and has only three drops since 2012.

While Parker lacks breakaway speed, he catches everything thrown his way with his 80-inch wingspan and would be an ideal possession receiver to possibly replace Bowe. He has a nose for the ball and the end zone, catching 33 touchdown passes in his four years at Louisville. While his route-running needs some refinement, he averaged an eye-popping 19.9 yards per reception this season and shows a knack for getting open.

The Chiefs are desperate for a playmaker at the wide receiver position, and Parker fits the bill. After the success rookie wideouts had this season, the Chiefs shouldn’t hesitate to draft Parker in the first round and let him become the focal point of their passing attack in 2015.
