A year ago in the Pro Bowl, fans who remained in front of the TV set long enough to see the postgame ceremonies got to see MVP Nick Foles of the Philadelphia Eagles ask the fans how they were doing on the public address system.
Think about that for a moment — Foles was the offensive MVP of the 2014 Pro Bowl. That is all you need to know about how seriously the NFL takes its own All-Star game. Still, like any athletic contest, there is going to be a winner and a loser, and picking a winner is where this game gets both tricky and interesting.
For the 2014 game, the league went away from the NFC-AFC format that had been used continuously since 1971. It now is essentially a glorified pickup game, complete with shoulder pads and officials. The majority of the most popular players will be selected during a Wednesday prime-time selection show on the NFL network. Still, enough of the two teams were selected Tuesday to give a clue as to the outcome.
First, look at the captains of this year’s teams, former great wide receivers Cris Carter and Michael Irvin. Carter seems to be a more serious follower of NFL players, while Irvin is a happy-go-lucky guy who follows the game, but not as seriously as Carter. In that case, the advantage goes to Carter, who seems to have picked a stronger pair of captains in Tuesday’s part one of the player draft. After Irvin won the coin flip and picked a Dallas Cowboys’ player, tailback DeMarco Murray, as his first pick, Carter got the next two picks and selected Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receiver Antonio Brown and Houston Texans’ defensive lineman J.J. Watt; it was a good start for Team Carter. Then, Irvin picked Cleveland Browns’ corner Joe Haden as his second captain. Carter and Irvin, with the aide of those four, will pick the rest of the team on Wednesday night, but the early projection here is that Carter’s team will win a high-scoring game.
Prediction: Team Carter 44, Team Irvin 41
