If there were an award given to most impressive offseason hiring for head coach, offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator, the Chicago Bears would win it.
Chicago bringing former Denver Broncos head coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase on board does not guarantee contention in the NFC North and beyond in 2015, but it does give them a legitimate shot at a playoff berth. It also means there are no more excuses for quarterback Jay Cutler in the Windy City.
Fox needed to find the right offensive coordinator to improve upon the Bears’ woes this past season. He put up a slam-dunk by bringing Gase along with him. There is no question having Peyton Manning and as many offensive weapons as the Broncos had over the past few years helped pad the offensive numbers. Still, Fox and Gase certainly deserve some credit.
Comparing Cutler to Manning is absolutely ridiculous. With that said, the Bears have very similar offensive weapons. In fact, one could make the case Chicago is better off with the more versatile running back in Matt Forte. Having the numerous weapons at key positions should allow Gase to implement a successful offensive scheme, one that Cutler should be able to run without complications.
Essentially, Cutler has been singing the same old song that consists of too many offensive coordinators and different offensive schemes over the span of only a few years. The firing and hiring of different-minded offensive coordinators basically warped Cutler’s brain, at least that is what the optimists want to believe. The reality is we will find out soon enough if Cutler is the problem, or rather, if he simply needed some consistency within the coaching staff.
As of right now, there is no guarantee Cutler remains the quarterback. Fox and Gase will have a sit down and a workout with the veteran signal caller. If they feel confident he can deliver, they will keep him as the starter. If not, the people of Chicago may finally get what a majority of them have wanted since the 2011 NFC Championship Game, which is Cutler to move on to another team.
Either way, Cutler will have his shot to show what he is truly capable of accomplishing on the gridiron. There is no more room for excuses for the gunslinger with Fox and Gase at the helm.
