Super Bowl XLIX Player Profiles: Richard Sherman

Some hate him and some love him, but as a football player, it’s hard not to respect him. Seattle Seahawks‘ Richard Sherman is the voice behind the best defense in the NFL. Despite his unique ways, Sherman is the best corner in football, and in Super Bowl XLIX.

Besides his love for trash talking, Sherman is a smart player and plays with a high football IQ. Before the NFL, he spent his time in Stanford, and despite his tough exterior, he has developed into a bright and well-educated scholar-athlete. On the field, Sherman has turned into the most feared corner in the league, just like how the New England PatriotsDarrelle Revis used to be. The ability to be that smart off on the field is a credential not many athletes can hold.

Over the course of his young, four-year career, Sherman also has some pretty impressive stats. He has averaged 56 tackles a game and six interceptions every season. Those are some pretty solid numbers for the young 26 year old who doesn’t see many balls thrown his way due to his ability to shut down opposing wide receivers. Sherman is one of the reasons why the Seahawks’ defense is as impressive as it is. His ability to take away one side of the field opens up the ability to send more players on a blitz and creates the chance for more big plays and turnovers.

There is more to Sherman’s game than just trash talk and bragging. Sherman brings a different level of intensity to the field that makes it hard for his teammates not to play off of. He, along with his teammates in the secondary Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas, are arguably the best players at their individual positions, and each of them make up the nickname “Legion of Boom.”

When the Seahawks beat the San Fransico 49ers in the 2013 AFC Championship game, Sherman labeled himself as the “best corner in the game,” and it’s hard to disagree with him. If I was Tom Brady and the Patriots, I’d be wise to stay away from his side of the field on Feb. 1.
