The Green Bay Packers were so close to another Super Bowl berth, but unfortunately, costly mistakes in the NFC Championship Game prevented the dream from becoming a reality. The good news is the Packers will be contending in 2015. Of course, in order to do that they must make some noise in free agency. Even though Ted Thompson typically avoids it like the plague, he must consider signing at least two quality players outside the 2014 roster.

Randall Cobb, Bryan Bulaga and Tramon Williams aren’t going anywhere. Cobb is going to be offered a substantial amount of money in the neighborhood of Jordy Nelson’s four-year, $39.05 million deal. Even though he won’t make that much, he’s still expected to get paid a decent amount. Bulaga is another player Green Bay must retain, while Williams will take a lower salary than his previous $8.5 million average to stay with the Packers.

Letroy Guion did a good job filling in for the injured B.J. Raji this past season. But, both players are free agents, which means Green Bay will be better off bringing in a quality nose tackle/defensive tackle. If the Packers want to make a serious splash, they should look no further than Terrance Knighton. Despite Thompson hate signing players to big deals in free agency, Knighton could be a serious game changer for the Packers in the middle.

With 14 players from the 2014 roster set to enter free agency, unfavorable moves will have to be made in the offseason. The Packers have only so much money to go around. Unfortunately, several of the players who will be free agents will not be back. Among them could be Davon House, Matt Flynn, John Kuhn, Raji, Guion and others. Green Bay must let some players walk in order to improve their roster in other areas.

Whether Green Bay retains Williams or House is irrelevant because they still need to upgrade the cornerback position from outside the 2014 roster. One free agent in particular the Packers must sign is Byron Maxwell. The Seattle Seahawks cornerback would be a great fit for the team because he’s productive and Green Bay should be able to get him at a reasonable price. Essentially, he’s a much-needed upgrade at the position.

Inside linebackers Brad Jones and A.J. Hawk will be released to free up $7.25 million in cap space. That will allow the team to sign a talented inside linebacker so that Clay Matthews can move back outside and continue his role as an elite pass rusher. With several talented inside linebackers available, Rey Maualuga and Brandon Spikes are two players the Packers should focus on.
