CB Brings the Most Offseason Question Marks For Dallas Cowboys

When it comes to addressing the defensive side of the ball this offseason, the defensive line and linebacker positions are pretty cut and dry for the Dallas Cowboys – they know exactly what they have in regards to talent and long-term potential in the current players on the roster.

It seems like the team finally has a few playmakers and some stability at the safety spot with J.J. Wilcox and Barry Church. This is something they haven’t been able to say since Darren Woodson was back there covering up the many flaws of the hard hitting Roy Williams. So, with the exception of adding a few backup players, the team seems set at the safety spot.

The position that will need the most attention is cornerback. Orlando Scandrick once again proved that he is the best corner on the team as he drew all of the tough assignments against the opposing team’s best receivers and excelled at it. He also grew to be one of the team’s vocal leaders and should be a player the team decides to keep around for quite some time. Sterling Moore was a nice surprise from training camp, and the Cowboys should look to keep him as their third cornerback because they can sign him for cheap.

Brandon Carr is where the team will have to weigh their options; he will either be released or he will have to take a major pay cut to remain with the team. There is no way they are going to pay him the $12.7 million he is owed next year, even if he had played to the level that dollar amount suggests. If he is willing to take a pay cut so that the team can go out and sign additional pieces to help get them closer to the Super Bowl, then the team would love to have him back, as he began to play with more confidence as the season came to an end. If not, Jerry Jones will look to the draft to find a cheaper replacement for him.

The problem with finding a rookie is that you never know how they will perform. The Cowboys traded up to get Morris Claiborne, a player they haven’t had rated that high since Deion Sanders, to be their answer at the cornerback spot. Well, in three years he’s done nothing but disappoint, as he has not even come close to looking like a player who is worthy of being an undrafted free agent, let alone a top five pick. So the Cowboys will more than likely invite him back to training camp to give him the opportunity to make the squad, but there is no guarantee that he will make the cut. They feel the need to give him one final evaluation, as he’s never made it through an entire training camp healthy.

They don’t want to give up on him too soon, but at what point is he just holding back progress? This unit played up and down all of last season, and the team will be looking for more consistency this year. So, Jones will need to decide if the answers to his secondary are already on the roster, or if he needs to go out and find them through the draft or free agency.
