Seattle Seahawks CB Jeremy Lane is lucky he is not going to be tasked with covering New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski this week in Super Bowl XLIX.
Lane’s comments that Gronk is “okay” and “not that great” are foolish, and not even remotely accurate. Has Lane ever actually watched Gronk on film? By simply being on the field, the Patriots TE makes the entire offense more dynamic. He can block, line up inside or spit out wide. He can make plays in double coverage, and he’s almost impossible to effectively cover with only one guy.
He also just happens to be one of, if not the best red zone targets in the NFL.
Other than QB Tom Brady and possibly CB Darrelle Revis, Gronk is the most important player on the Patriots. What he has been able to do on the field since he entered the league is ridiculous, and he is actually healthy now, which makes him even more dangerous to opposing defenses. And now Lane has added unnecessary fuel to the fire.
On top of all the ridiculousness over Deflate-gate, Lane has given the Patriots, and more importantly Gronk, a reason to come into the NFL’s biggest game of the season with an even bigger chip on their shoulder. That’s far from intelligent. The Seahawks cornerback should have just worried about who his assignment will be in the Super Bowl and kept his preposterous, and inaccurate thoughts to himself.
