One of the biggest areas of opportunity for the New York Jets is to completely overhaul and revamp their defensive secondary. New head coach Todd Bowles is a defensive-oriented kind of coach and will want to make sure he has top cornerbacks in his secondary to keep up with the high-octane offenses come 2015. At the current moment, the Jets don’t have any guaranteed playmakers at the position since many are coming off major injury from this past season. It makes the most sense to grab a veteran cornerback that can come in and take care of business, especially someone with history on the team like Antonio Cromartie.
Both Dee Milliner and Dexter McDougle had to deal with season-ending injuries so they unfortunately regressed in regard to playing experience and getting suited into their defensive roles. Marcus Williams is okay at best and Darrin Walls showed signs of promise, but isn’t a complete player that can consistently deliver. They all need guidance and mentoring, which Cromartie would bring to the table and then some.
The Jets need to make sure they are heavy spenders come free agency. The best course of action is to reunite with Cromartie by acquiring him in free agency and bring a sense of stability to the position. He is a key free agent that the Jets should go all out to bring back since he’s actually one of the top options on the market and had a pretty good season last year..
With the Arizona Cardinals last season, he had 48 tackles and three interceptions. He also did a tremendous job mentoring those around him as he earned the respect of his peers. Many looked up to Cromartie to help them improve their craft as smart and instinctive defenders.
It’s no secret that the Jets tremendously missed his presence last season as they were a debacle on defense. They constantly got torched by opposing teams that often times was as comical as it was embarrassing. With key injuries and just an overall lack of quality talent, Cromartie would be a nice addition to have once again as they look to add even more talent down the line to their defensive secondary.
Considering Cromartie worked with Bowles last season on the Cardinals, it should only make it an easy transition for him to return to the team that he had much success with. The Jets would get an immediate upgrade back to their secondary. This would be a smart move to make and could kick start a solid offseason with better talent. Not to mention, the incoming of great talent to build for the future via the 2015 NFL Draft.
