Deion Sanders’ Comments Could Help Doug Baldwin Win Super Bowl MVP

After capturing the NFC Championship over the Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin reacted to a comment that was made by Hall-of-Famer Deion Sanders regarding the Seahawks’ receiving corps. Apparently, Sanders said that Seattle’s receivers were “aight.”

After looking at how Baldwin retorted Sanders’ remark, many would say that Baldwin was offended. However, during the week leading up to Super Bowl XLIX, Baldwin sat down for an interview with Sanders on the NFL Network and said that no offence was taken, but still found time to prove why the Seahawks’ receivers are better than “aight.”

Sanders’ argument was that Seattle’s group of receivers lacked pass catchers who put up similar numbers like the ones seen by Calvin Johnson, Antonio Brown and A.J. Green. Baldwin, who finished the 2014 regular season with 66 catches and 825 yards, countered by stating that he and the rest of his fellow receivers are just as good, and the reason why their statistics differ so much is because the Seahawks attempted the least amount of passes all season (454).

Furthermore, Baldwin mentioned that Seattle’s main focus on offense is Marshawn Lynch and their running game. He continued to defend his point by telling Sanders during the interview that the Seahawks are “the most efficient receivers on third down.” According to teamrankings.com, Seattle was eighth in the league in third-down conversions with 43.6 percent.

No matter how Baldwin says he feels about Sanders’ critique, I believe that a monster has been awakened. His body language and tone of voice in the postgame interview after clinching their second consecutive trip to the Super Bowl definitely showed that Sanders’ comments rubbed him the wrong way.

Even though Baldwin said that his team’s main objective is to get Lynch named the Super Bowl MVP, I think that there is as good chance that Baldwin just might explode this Sunday and capture the high honor for himself. Yes, that task will be difficult, considering that he’ll be up against Darrelle Revis and former teammate Brandon Browner; but, if the fire that was lit under him is bright enough, he could definitely shock Sanders and the rest of the world.
