NFL Makes Another Mistake, Admits Nate Solder’s TD Shouldn’t Have Counted

It seems like every few days, we hear of another mistake the NFL has made in terms of officiating or administering punishment. Seriously, why hasn’t Roger Goodell been removed from office yet?

This time around, it appears the referees overwatching the AFC Championship game between the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts missed a glaring illegal substitution that led to a touchdown. According to NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino, when Tom Brady threw a touchdown to offensive tackle Nate Solder, there should have been an illegal substitution call that would have negated the six points.

“There was an issue on that play where on the previous play, [Cameron] Fleming had reported as an eligible player,” Blandino said via CSNNE.com. “And on the Solder touchdown he went back to playing an ineligible position. That’€™s illegal. That’€™s an illegal substitution. So that’€™s something we discussed with the crew. Bill [Belichick] was made aware of it. So we’€™re going to be looking for that, make sure we follow the proper mechanics so that doesn’t happen again.”

If it wasn’t for the fact that the Patriots stomped the Colts and the world wasn’t completely blinded from everything else by DeflateGate, we might have heard about this sooner. More people might have also made a bigger deal about it. Either way, it appears it didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

Still, it’s just another example of the NFL’s current incompetence.
