Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots won their fourth Lombardi Trophy by defeating the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX in thrilling fashion.

The Patriots’ defense made timely plays, particularly when Malcolm Butler made the game-winning interception in the end zone. That play call and execution will be dissected for the rest of eternity as fans everywhere discuss whether or not running Marshawn Lynch would have been the correct play call.

People will also continue to talk about Deflategate, the circus catch Jermaine Kearse made, which immediately gave all Patriots fans 2008 Super Bowl flashbacks and made them want to vomit, and the skirmish that erupted at the end of the game. But this Super Bowl is about the legacies of Brady and Belichick.

There are many NFL fans that detest Brady, Belichick and the Patriots. New England fans and the Patriots organization are fine with that. They embrace the “us against the world” mentality and almost relish having to defend the Patriots. There will be fans and media members who will never ever give Brady and Belichick their just due.

For those people it will always be about Spygate and the feeling that Brady and Belichick are generally unlikable. Both Brady and Belichick are not bad guys, but people love to loathe them. That aside, from a football standpoint, they are also the best QB-coach combination in NFL history.

They have won four Super Bowls in six appearances and they are the winningest QB-coach tandem in NFL history. Brady is tied with Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw for the most Super Bowl wins ever by a QB (four) while Belichick is tied with Chuck Noll for the most Super Bowl wins by a head coach (four). Brady now has 21 postseason wins (record) and Belichick has 22 playoff victories (record).

Brady has benefited from good defensive play in Super Bowls, but he has also made his receivers elevate their game while having only two true marquee receiving targets (TE Rob Gronkowski and WR Randy Moss) in his career. Brady also collected his third Super Bowl MVP award Sunday night (tied for the most all time), and he became the first QB to lead his team to a Super Bowl victory after throwing 50+ passes. He was able to forget about two early interceptions and put on an unbelievable show in the fourth quarter.

Belichick knows how to get the most out of his players and he is a true mastermind when dealing with matchups. He knows how to win in a variety of ways. Conventional wisdom said the Patriots should run the ball against the Seahawks. Belichick had the Patriots begin Super Bowl XLIX with three consecutive passes, and Brady threw the ball 50 times for 328 yards and four TDs Sunday night. That’s Belichick, though, and it’s a large part of what makes him great.

Not everyone will agree with this assessment and that’s OK, but Brady and Belichick are four-time Super Bowl champions and the best QB-coach duo in NFL history.
