If Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel wants everyone to start taking him seriously, his decision to enter a treatment program in the offseason for his off-the-field issues is definitely the first step.
Even though the exact treatment Manziel will be receiving is unknown, there is no denying that whatever it is it should put him on a path to succeed. Not only will he become a better human being, but also he should be mentally put in a good position to compete for Cleveland’s starting quarterback job this year.
“Johnny knows there are areas in which he needs to improve in order to be a better family member, friend and teammate and he thought the offseason was the right time to take this step,” Manziel’s advisor Brad Beckworth said, according to CBS Sports. “On behalf of Johnny and his family, we’re asking for privacy until he rejoins the team in Cleveland.”
During his rookie season, Manziel was more of a nuisance off the field than he was productive when given his limited opportunities to shine under center. A specific incident was when he reportedly threw a party the night before he was supposed to be at a treatment session for the Browns. Many believe the party is the reason why he showed up late to the session, which he was fined for by the team.
I am not a huge supporter of Manziel, nor do I believe he has the capability to start in the NFL. With that said, it is certainly a mature move if he willingly decided to enter a treatment program to better himself. It shows that he is prepared to put himself in the best positon to succeed as the leader of a football team. More importantly, he is prepared to take the competition for the starting quarterback position seriously.
