We knew the Seattle Seahawks “Legion of Boom” secondary was banged up heading into Super Bowl XLIX, but had no idea of the true extent of the injuries. Cornerback Richard Sherman is expected to undergo surgery to repair ligaments in his elbow and hard-hitting safety Kam Chancellor may have surgery to repair a torn MCL in his knee suffered in practice just a few days before Super Bowl Sunday.

The latest news coming out of Seattle is also the most severe. Perhaps the best defensive back in football, Earl Thomas, will have surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Thomas is expected to be fully recovered and ready to play by the start of training camp.

If you didn’t believe how tough most football players are, then this story of Thomas’ grit and perseverance should turn you into a believer. Obviously, having a healthy shoulder is of the utmost importance for a wrap-up tackling safety like Thomas. I personally, saw no ill effects of the injury on the field last Sunday, so I am of the belief that the four-time All-Pro’s injury is no excuse for the Seahawks’ loss.

Tackling in the secondary was not an issue for Seattle. Rather, the underneath routes to shifty wide receivers like Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola are what gave the Seahawks fits, along with Rob Gronkowski burning one on one coverage against the Seattle linebackers. Thomas and the rest of the standout Seattle secondary proved their toughness by playing through serious pain, but these injuries have no business absolving the Seahawks of full responsibility for their Super Bowl defeat.
