Only Option For Houston Texans Is To Have Open Competition At QB Position

If anyone wants to know why the Houston Texans failed to make the playoffs last season, they should look no further than the passing game. It is that reason why head coach Bill O’Brien wants to have an open competition at the quarterback positon in 2015, which is really the only option for the Texans.

“We’ll make the right decision and it will probably be a competition,” O’Brien said, according to CBS Sports. “It will be something where guys come in and compete and have to win the job and that’s the way it should be and that’s what we’re looking to do.”

Considering Ryan Fitzpatrick, who should be the projected starter for the 2015 NFL season, is recovering from surgery due to a fractured tibia he suffered in December, the position could be wide open for the taking. Of course, there also is plenty of uncertainty surrounding who will even be on the roster to compete for the starting quarterback job.

Ryan Mallett is set to enter free agency, Case Keenum is an exclusive rights free agent and Tom Savage has a mere 19 passing attempts under his belt for his NFL career. To make matters worse, none of these quarterbacks showed much promise during the season, with the exception of Keenum passing for 250 yards, two touchdowns and an interception against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17.

Houston has no shot of landing a worthy quarterback in the 2015 NFL Draft, or at least they will not acquire one who can have an immediate impact. There also are not any standouts in free agency to sign, unless the Texans are interested in taking a chance on Mark Sanchez, Michael Vick or Matt Flynn.

Essentially, Houston will be stuck with bringing back Keenum to compete against Fitzpatrick and Savage. Even though there are far worse quarterbacks in the league than Fitzpatrick, he certainly is not someone who gives off a playoff swagger that is necessary for teams to reach the ultimate goal.
