The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have decided to go in a new direction at quarterback, which is why they elected to release Josh McCown. Even if Mike Glennon is not going to be the man under center in 2015, Tampa Bay saw enough from McCown to know they don’t want him. However, that doesn’t mean he’s useless. Here’s a look at five teams that could sign McCown following his release from the Buccaneers.

No, McCown would not be replacing MVP Aaron Rodgers. However, backups Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien are both free agents. Neither quarterback has shown much promise of leading a team to victory if Rodgers goes down with an injury, although Flynn has flashed potential at various times in his career. McCown isn’t necessarily the answer, but there’s no question he has thrived in the NFC North before.

The status of Robert Griffin III in our nation’s capital is completely unknown. In fact, there’s a good chance he won’t be playing for the Washington Redskins in 2015. Along with that, Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy may not be the answer. McCown is hardly an upgrade over the three players, but inserting a quarterback who has shown signs of solid play into the right system could open up a window of opportunities.

With Brian Hoyer set to enter free agency and Johnny Manziel far from being ready to lead the Cleveland Browns into battle, there could definitely be a need for McCown. The Browns must find someone they can buy into. Despite McCown struggling with the Buccaneers last season, his performance with the Chicago Bears in 2013 might just be enough to give Cleveland the necessary confidence to sign him.

The Tennessee Titans are unlikely to retain Jake Locker, which means there will be an open competition between Zach Mettenberger and Charlie Whitehurst. Both signal callers showed signs of potential in seven games last season, with Mettenberger becoming the clear favorite to win the job in 2015. But, signing McCown to intensify the quarterback competition could bring the best out of all three players, which would only benefit the Titans.

Geno Smith is far from the answer at quarterback, which is why the New York Jets find themselves in a bit of a bind this offseason. If the Jets don’t sign a veteran to at least compete with Smith for the starting job, there is going to be uproar in New York. Considering the Jets ranked 32nd in the NFL in passing yards per game (184.1) last season, any quarterback who will be brought in will be an upgrade.
