The NFL Scouting Combine starts tomorrow, and you can bet all eyes will be on former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston. Winston comes into the Combine on most people’s boards tied with Oregon’s Marcus Mariota as the top quarterback prospect in this year’s draft, and scouts will be looking to see which one moves ahead of the other.
But in order to do that, Winston has to make a decision on whether or not he’s going to throw at the Combine. According to his quarterback coach George Whitfield Jr., Winston is still mulling over the idea of throwing in the passing drills, calling it “a game-time decision”.
However, the decision shouldn’t be that difficult for Winston to make. In fact, it’s really easy. Winston needs to throw at the Combine. It’s just that simple.
Winston already comes into the 2015 draft with a lot of questions surrounding him, especially about his maturity and off-field antics. Not throwing in the drills will only raise questions and concerns in many scouts’ eyes. Plus, by not throwing, Winston would be passing up a big opportunity to show improved footwork and passing mechanics and give teams more looks at his accuracy and velocity.
If Mariota throws — and throws well — and Winston doesn’t, his stock could definitely take a hit with most teams that are projected to be looking at him. Both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans have expressed interest in Winston and Mariota, and a big day throwing for Mariota could cement his place ahead of Winston.
If Winston wants to stay ahead of Mariota, then he needs to throw at the Combine. But if he doesn’t like either Tampa Bay or Tennessee and is fine not going No. 1 overall, then he’s more than welcome to sit out of the throwing drills.
