Winners, Losers From the LeSean McCoy-Kiko Alonso Trade

The NFL/twitter world exploded yesterday when it was announced that the Philadelphia Eagles traded Pro Bowl running back LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills for linebacker Kiko Alonso. Trades in the NFL never happen, so when a blockbuster trade of these proportions occurs, everyone loses their minds. Now that the dust has settled, let’s take a look back at the trade and judge who made out the winners and who are the losers of this monumental event.

First, Alonso is now on a team that wants him, so win there. Second, he rejoins his college coach for another win. Third, he shifts from a team that will never win their division (at least as long as Tom Brady’s around) to a team that is always in the hunt for their divisional crown. So far that's three wins. He's also joining Mychal Kendricks to form possibly the fastest linebacking duo in the NFL, which makes four. Winner.

While McCoy knew his relationship with Kelly was chilling and his future with the Eagles dwindling, I bet he didn’t predict it would all end with him landing in Buffalo. McCoy has already expressed displeasure with being shipped to Buffalo, and there is a possibility he holds out in hopes the Bills will give him a big fat extension. Hope the Bills have their wallets ready.

If this trade proved anything, it’s that Chip Kelly really likes his old players and really really wants to rebrand the Eagles as the Ducks. I mean hey, they’re both birds, so that’s a start. Alonso is now the ninth Oregon player on the Eagles, and the obvious next step for Kelly is to move up and snag Marcus Mariota in the draft.

Despite McCoy’s “poor” season last year — poor by his standards, as he still had over 1,300 yards rushing — he still has freakish talent and is an extremely tough running back to tackle. Just read any of the tweets coming from NFC East defenders who were all happy to hear they wouldn’t have to be facing McCoy twice a season. Now that ankle-breaking work falls upon the AFC East.

With recent cuts and now the trade of McCoy, the Eagles have a ton of cap space to work with. Now with all of this new-found money, you can bet Kelly has a plan for attacking free agency. One thing is for sure now: Jeremy Maclin won’t be leaving Philly. That is unless he’s signed, then traded to Tampa for the No. 1 pick so Kelly can draft Mariota. You never know.

LOSER: Matt Cassel

In today’s breaking news, the Vikings just traded Cassel to the Bills. Now Cassel’s only job will be to hand the ball off to McCoy 25 times a game and pray to the heavens above that he doesn’t throw a pick in the 15 chances he has to pass the ball. It’s a tough life for a mediocre quarterback on a mediocre team.

I hope the Bills and Buffalo fans knew what they were getting themselves into when the signed on Rex Ryan to coach the team. Rex is an excellent defensive mind, but, much like his counterpart in this trade, has a clear vision in his head and does what he thinks is best. It’s apparent now that the 2015 Bills will ground and pound and play defense, much like those Jets teams he used to coach.

LOSER: The Value of the Running Back

Just two years ago LeSean McCoy was the No. 1 back in the NFL. Well, I guess Adrian Peterson was still around, but McCoy was a fantasy monster and was deadly in both the running and passing game. And now he’s been shipped out of Philly. You never see this with QBs, WRs or any other star players, yet running backs are becoming easier to replace in the eyes of the NFL. Their value has greatly diminished.
