After taking a step back in 2014 and missing the playoffs in their second year under Mike McCoy’s direction, the San Diego Chargers are likely to be active participants in this year’s free agency free-for-all. Add to that their nearly $ 30 million in salary cap space and the Bolts are poised to do more than stand idly by when the market opens on Mar. 10. Here are five perfect moves that the Chargers should ideally make in free agency.

5. Marcus Gilchrist

Unspectacular but reliable, safety Marcus Gilchrist built solid chemistry with Eric Weddle last season. He’s still just 26 years old, which bodes well for his future in lightning bolts, and his familiarity with defensive coordinator John Pagano’s scheme should certainly be a draw as well. With proven durability (three consecutive seasons without missing a game), the Chargers should aim to keep that kind of continuity intact for 2015.

4. Brandon Flowers

It would be foolish not to start off with two members of the secondary that allowed the fourth-fewest passing yards in the league a year ago, and Brandon Flowers was a big contributor to those impressive numbers. He bet on himself with a one-year deal in San Diego and is set to get paid handsomely for it, but the Chargers would be crazy not to at least give a wholehearted effort at trying to keep the 28-year-old aspiring shutdown corner.

3. Derrick Morgan

With the multiple fronts that Pagano likes to utilize on defense, 26-year-old pass-rush specialist Derrick Morgan certainly appeals to the Chargers. The former first-round pick showed versatility when the Tennessee Titans made the switch to the 3-4, so he has the exact skills San Diego is seeking. After notching just 26 sacks a year ago, the fourth-lowest total in the NFL, the Chargers need a signing like this to give their pass rush a jolt.

2. Vince Wilfork

The only aging star on this list, Vince Wilfork would be a tremendous addition to a defensive line that has lacked a veteran presence for quite a while now. This would also alleviate the pressure of absolutely having to land the elite nose tackle prospect in the 2015 NFL Draft, Danny Shelton, by filling that void in the lineup. A short-term, incentive-heavy deal would be perfect to keep Wilfork motivated and the San Diego defense on the upswing.

1. Rodney Hudson

An often overlooked story this offseason for the Bolts was the retirement of longtime center Nick Hardwick. His importance to the offense cannot be overstated, and finding a proper replacement like Rodney Hudson would be a terrific get for the Chargers. Just 26 with untapped potential, this signing would be beneficial in multiple ways by also taking a terrific young lineman away from the AFC West rival Kansas City Chiefs.
