The Miami Dolphins have undoubtedly been the biggest players in free agency this year, even though they didn’t have one of the best cap situations going into the offseason. The reason for that is clear: Mike Tannenbaum is making his mark on the team, and he’s going for broke in his first year on the job.

Whether you agree with the moves that he has made or not, Tenenbaum has absolutely transformed this team in a matter of days. The obvious “statement” move was bringing in Ndamukong Suh. Is it necessarily smart to bring in a defensive tackle for top-flight quarterback money? No, but when you have the chance to bring in the best free agent defensive lineman since Reggie White, you make the move.

Subsequently, he orchestrated a number of moves on the offensive side of the ball that, if they pan out, could instantly make the Dolphins a Super Bowl contender.

The high-priced signing of Jordan Cameron is risky considering his concussion history, but there is no doubt that when healthy, Cameron is one of the best tight ends in the game. The trade with the New Orleans Saints for Kenny Stills was a masterful piece of finding a high-talent guy at a low price, while getting rid of one of the most toxic contracts in recent memory in Dannell Ellerbe.

Finally, he got rid of Mike Wallace, and though it was for far less than he was worth, it was still a good move from an organizational standpoint.

Tannenbaum has made it very clear that there is a new sheriff in town, and if things pan out well for the Dolphins, he may have saved a franchise from itself. Alternatively, if things go sideways, he will be forever be known as a guy who went big and lost. If nothing else, he deserves credit for putting himself out there.
