The culture that few people like Darren Sharper perpetuate must be extinguished. According to multiple sources, the former All-Pro NFL safety has been charged with rape. What’s even more purportedly disgusting is that Sharper already faces three other charges of sexual assaults. According to reports, Sharper has also been indicted in Los Angeles, New Orleans and Phoenix.<

Sharper is currently being jailed in Los Angeles, awaiting multiple verdicts. If any of these allegations are accurate, Sharper’s reputation is beyond repair. But what is nearly as atrocious is that Shaper could even qualify for redemption.

Forgiveness is divine, but what Sharper has done appears to be rampant and without remorse, converting a series of terrible acts into an incorrigible constant of psyche. Sharper cannot buy his way back into grace, as Kobe Bryant appears to have accomplished. Sharper is no longer in the league and can’t therefore change an “8” into a “24” and just expect us to forget about it all. But we shouldn’t forget about it in the first place, and in making Sharper infamous, hopefully we can negatively-lionize this conduct once and for all.

Awareness must be raised in communicating that rape isn’t only a barbaric act of the past; it’s a wicked act of disregard for another human’s rights, and Sharper is the latest perpetrator that deserves to figuratively burn. If you have kids, think of your daughter, think of your son and think of the great ways the world is changing, but be cognizant of how we still have such a long road to traverse.

2014 was a terrible year for the NFL in terms of reaction to, and rehabilitation of, all segments of sexual violence. These latest charges reveal that this primitive culture is still conscious, but now is the time for a big influence such as the NFL to throw their clout around, be proactive and render this repugnant option as no longer viable.
