Hopefully the Tennessee Titans no longer pay for long-distance phone service. Expect the Titans’ GM, Ruston Webster to make the call to Marcus Mariota right after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Jameis Winston with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft. The NFL is a quarterback-driven league, and the best quarterback of the draft will “fall” to the Titans.

Mariota’s draft value could receive a late boost thanks to Chip Kelly likely offering almost anyone in a trade with Tennessee. If this speculation becomes fact, it could unite Mariota with the Titans under interesting circumstances.

Why am I not high on Winston? Hand size. Oh, and a few other things. The hand size issue will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, unless the camel’s back is already broken. At the NFL Combine, Winston’s hands measured just 9 and 3/8 inches. According to ESPN.com, just two of 61 starting quarterbacks since 2006 have boasted hands of that size or smaller.

Mariota’s hand size is just half an inch longer. It’s not huge at 9 and 7/8 inches, but still puts him ahead of the projected No. 1 pick. Although the lead in hand size isn’t colossal, the former Oregon Ducks‘ QB is practically a saint when you compare off-the-field issues between Mariota and Winston. It’s these talking points that’ll likely enter the discussions within the Tennessee war room.

Like it or not, the Titans need a quarterback more than a defensive end, principally on value. Mariota may not be the best QB prospect in recent memory, but this Heisman trophy winner will definitely meet the Titans’ needs at No. 2.
