2015 NFL Draft: Indianapolis Colts' 5 Biggest Needs After Free Agency

After appearing in the AFC Championship game in 2014, the Indianapolis Colts did not have to address many needs this offseason. For the few needs that they did have, the Colts were able to find many short-term solutions via free agency. After going 11-5 just a season ago, the Colts don’t have much to worry about as the draft approaches, but if they hope to remain contenders for a while, they may want to acquire some talent at these positions.

Currently the Colts have three cornerbacks in Vontae Davis, Greg Toler and Darius Butler, who entering 2015 will be in their third season together as a unit. Cornerback may not look like a position that needs to be addressed immediately, but with Toler’s contract expiring at the end of the year, the Colts may want to think about selecting someone in the upcoming draft that they can take their time with and groom as a potential future replacement.

As with the cornerback position, the Colts currently have no issues with their starting inside linebackers, but after D’Qwell Jackson and Jerrell Freeman, there is no real depth at the position. With players like Henoc Muamba, a former member of the CFL who has only a few snaps of NFL experience under his belt, as backups, the Colts would be wise to add some depth to the position through the draft.

As has become the common theme with this team, the right tackle position may not be a cause for concern this season, but it could become one in the near future. With quarterback Andrew Luck soon due for a pricey contract extension, the Colts will need to cut costs elsewhere if they want to lock up the face of their franchise. One player who could become a cap causality because of this is Gosder Cherilus who is owed over $ 9 million in 2016.

2. Running Back

For a few years now the running game has been a major problem for the Colts. Despite acquiring Trent Richardson back in 2013, the running back position has still been a major problem for this team. The free agent signing of Frank Gore may pay off in the short term, but the Colts will still need help at the position in the future. With a deep running back class about to enter the league, this need could be addressed by the Colts in the draft.

1. Safety

Entering the 2015 season, the Colts currently find themselves with essentially one starter at the safety position. Outside of Mike Adams, who is 34 years old, there is no other player on the current roster who can fill the void at the other safety position. The Colts may not have many needs heading into the draft, but the safety position sure is one.
