New York Jets Mustn’t Waste Pick On Georgia RB Todd Gurley

The New York Jets, led by new GM Mike Maccagnan, have made a fair amount of incredibly wise moves this offseason, but the NFL draft is rapidly approaching, and there’s nothing to guarantee this trend will continue. But there is one way to ensure it doesn’t continue, and that would be to use the No. 6 overall pick on Georgia running back Todd Gurley, no matter how good he might be in the future.

The Jets made a ton of win-now moves this offseason: Bringing 31- and 29-year-old Antonio Cromartie and Darrelle Revis back to town was a swell idea, but it also was a move that will only make a significant impact over the next two seasons. Acquiring WR Brandon Marshall from the Chicago Bears was also a savvy maneuver, but also a win-now move as Marshall is 31. Current starting RB Chris Ivory is 27, so it’s fair to assume he also has two seasons near the top of his game remaining at this point of his career.

This all sounds great, but there’s one big problem still: the Jets have no clue who their QB will be for the next two years, which makes absolutely zero sense and is borderline negligent.

This being the case, while Gurley is thought of by some as being the second-most talented player in the entire 2015 draft class, he simply makes no sense for the Jets. Neither Geno Smith nor Ryan Fitzpatrick are the caliber of QB that could even “game manage” their way through a postseason run, so no matter what a backfield duo of Ivory and Gurley might provide their offense, it would be completely irrelevant without a QB who can make the big throws in the clutch.

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota might not be the answer. It’s debatable. But if the Jets do indeed decide to take a pass on Mariota, or he’s surprisingly unavailable at No. 6, the Jets would be better served taking a pass rusher — or even a WR — considering they are far more of a need on a long-term basis.
