Indianapolis Colts Draft Redundant Receiver In Phillip Dorsett

You don’t draft T.Y. Hilton 2.0 when Hilton 1.0 is running fine and dandy.

What does former Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Phillip Dorsett bring to the table? Everything that Hilton has already set. Perhaps the Indianapolis Colts think there’s more room at the table. And maybe anything Hilton can do, Dorsett does faster.

Dorsett burned a 4.33 40-yard dash at the combine and boasted an unbelievable 24.2 yards per catch with the Hurricanes in 2014. If any of this translates to the NFL, maybe the Colts will take the next step in next year’s playoffs after all. That next step? The Super Bowl.

But do championship teams make it to the Super Bowl with such obvious redundancy? The New England Patriots have done it with tight ends and the Seattle Seahawks through defensive backs, but what about carbon-copy slot receivers? When you believe you’ve found transcendent talent in the draft, you don’t take a rain check. The best example being the Detroit Lions in selecting Calvin Johnson when a receiver was the least of their needs, but made the most of that opportunity.

Maybe being redundant is the new vogue and just maybe the Colts are the new “fastest show on turf.”
