Coming into the 2015 NFL Draft, it was widely expected that the Kansas City Chiefs would select a receiver with their first-round pick. However, the team instead decided to address the secondary at No. 18 overall with the selection of Marcus Peters.

While it’s certainly hard to fault the Chiefs for taking a chance on a player as talented as Peters, there is certainly some risk involved with the selection. Peters was dismissed from Washington‘s football team last season, and many think he has a bit of an attitude problem. With that said, Peters might be the best cover corner in the entire draft class, and if he pans out, the Chiefs just selected a player who could be a true shutdown corner.

One thing that certainly bodes well for the Chiefs is that their locker room is one of the best in the NFL. This is a team with plenty of veteran leadership and a coach known for his ability to connect with players in Andy Reid. Peters needs guidance from veterans who have been in the league for a while, and Kansas City has plenty of players who can mentor Peters until he is fully ready for the mental side of the NFL game.

That said, if Peters can’t get his attitude corrected in Kansas City, he will prove to be a massive bust for the Chiefs. If the team’s veteran leaders can’t get through to him and he continues to argue with coaches and get in trouble, the Chiefs are going to look very bad for taking such a big chance on a player with as many question marks as Peters.

Overall, this is a selection that could either be a huge success or a huge failure for the Chiefs. Peters could be the player that takes Kansas City’s secondary to the next level, or he could bust out of the league in a few years.
