After losing Julius Thomas earlier this offseason, a big hole was opened up in the Denver Broncos offense. The Broncos no longer had a game-changing tight end who could catch touchdowns at a ridiculous rate and take the pressure off of the rest of Denver’s offense. While I won’t say that the Broncos selection of Jeff Heuerman is going to totally fill the void left behind by Thomas, it will certainly help the team get over the loss of their star tight end.

If it weren’t for injuries that plagued him throughout his college career, Heuerman could have arguably been the best tight end in the 2015 class, however, even with the injuries, he remains a very good player. Heuerman has very solid athletic ability and he is a pretty decent receiver. Heuerman also deserves plenty of praise for playing through various injuries in his college career and somehow remaining effective throughout.

Another thing I really like about Heuerman is his willingness and ability to block effectively. He isn’t afraid to do the dirty work in the trenches, and that’s a skill that is becoming more and more rare in tight ends coming out of the college ranks. Heuerman understands the importance of getting low and taking solid angles on blocks, and that allows him to make a real impact in that area of the game.

Overall, the selection of Jeff Heuerman was a very solid one for the Denver Broncos. This is a team that needed someone who could come in and help replace the production that Julius Thomas takes with him, and while Heuerman can’t do it all by himself, he will certainly help Denver’s offense stay afloat despite the loss of Thomas. This is a very wise, underrated move that will pay major dividends for the Broncos moving forward.
