The Washington Redskins have had a very solid 2015 NFL Draft overall so far; however, the selection of Florida running back Matt Jones in the third round seems like a big reach to me for the team. I understand that the team lost Roy Helu earlier this offseason and that Washington wanted to add a complimentary piece to Alfred Morris, but there were certainly more pressing needs than running back on the roster. The Redskins may have wanted to add a running back in the draft, but the selection of Jones this early on just seems foolish.
Jones is a very good power back, but outside of that, he doesn’t do much. He has a place in the NFL, but I don’t really see where he fits in with Washington. With Morris, Silas Redd and Chris Thompson already on the roster, Jones seems like a luxury pick for a team that can’t afford to take a luxury pick. With Morris locked in as the starter, Jones has his work cut out for him if he wants to play at all next season. The Redskins just already have a lot of talent at the running back position, and the addition of Jones doesn’t make any sense to me.
The team already has a running back that can run downhill and pick up extra yardage in Morris, and there is plenty of quality depth behind him. The third round isn’t a selection you want to waste on a player who isn’t going to play much, but right now, it appears the Redskins have done just that. This was a foolish pick that the Redskins are going to regret.
