Former LSU Tigers offensive lineman La’El Collins brought some baggage to the NFL draft at the absolute worst time. But now, the sun could be rising and Collins could be granted a second chance as early as the second round.

According to New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, in a radio interview with NBC Sports’ PFT Live, Collins could be off the board by the end of day two.

Could Payton be implying the Saints are selecting Collins for pennies on the dollar? Or is this a classic example of gamesmanship, baiting a high-profile sucker move?

This situation is dicey, as the legal process lags far behind the draft process. Collins is neither a suspect nor has been cleared of the murder of a 29-year-old woman (according to Pro Football Talk). If Collins is innocent, as legally he’s presumed to be, is it fair for the lineman’s draft stock to plummet so far?

I see Collins as a late third-round investment at best, not because I’m unfairly comparing him to Aaron Hernandez, but because I’m fairly aware of how such a legal landmine can affect any franchise’s future.
