It was definitely a surprising pick for the Green Bay Packers when they announced the name of Ty Montgomery at the 94th spot. With Montgomery on the team, the Packers current wide receiver corps consists of Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Davante Adams, Jeff Janis, Jared Abbrederis, Myles White, and Montgomery. We may see a draft pick from last season already leaving by the end of this August.

Montgomery played wide receiver at Stanford University where he played all four years. The Packers must like the fact that Montgomery has experience playing all over the field offensively. He played in the slot, on the outside, in the wildcat as a quarterback, and in the tailback position. He also has special teams experience, where he was elected as an All-American in 2013 and All-Pac 12 in 2014.

At Receiver, Montgomery could open up a whole new level of talent under a quarterback like Aaron Rodgers. The problem is that the Packers wide receiver corps is so deep he may not have many chances to do so. Still has a long ways to go before he’s a well refined receiver. He does well in pass and run blocking. Montgomery is a 6-foot-2, 216 pound, thick-bodied guy with a 4.5 40-yard-dash level speed. At the combine he also recorded a 40.5-inch vertical leap.

After taking Montgomery at the end of the third round, Ted Thompson has Packers fans questioning whether we’ll even see a new face at all at inside linebacker at all this year.
