5 Players the Dallas Cowboys Should Have Drafted

For the most part the Dallas Cowboys had a solid draft; they put their focus squarely on the defensive side of the ball, an area of the team that definitely needed improving. You can’t properly address every one of your needs in one draft but there is always room for some critiquing. So with that said here’s a look at the five players the Dallas Cowboys should have drafted.

Sure he suffered a nasty knee injury just a few months ago and he is a bit undersized at 5-foot-9 but Antoine Winfield was the same size and he was widely regarded as one of the best in the league. Ekpre-Olomu relies too much on his toughness and athleticism vs. actual technique but with Orlando Scandrick and Brandon Carr making the money they are, why not take a flyer on a seventh-round pick who was a first team All-American?

Johnson may not be the traditional every-down back but he has a Charlie Garner feel to him. He is a complimentary back who is dangerous catching passes out of the backfield while still having the ability to be effective in between the tackles. The Cowboys needed someone to compliment Darren McFadden and while the third round may have been a bit high to take him considering their other needs, he would have been a nice addition.

There is a strong belief that the Cowboys secretly coveted Davis in spite of the fact he didn’t rack up a ton of sacks in college. They are in need of someone to help clog up the middle of the line to stop runners since they have pass rushers in Greg Hardy, Demarcus Lawrence, and Randy Gregory. They should have traded one of their worthless seventh-round picks to move up and take him ahead of the Baltimore Ravens.

Somehow Jarrett fell to the fifth round; the knock on him is that he’s undersized but all he did was produce on the field. The Cowboys took a chance on Jay Ratliff and his frame and he rewarded them with Pro Bowl play for years. Instead of adding a seventh linebacker in the fourth round, they should have addressed their need for a defensive tackle here, while still getting their swing offensive tackle with their third-round pick.

David Johnson was a stretch but the Cowboys really should have done whatever was necessary to move up in the third round and get Coleman. He has breakout speed and was productive at Indiana where they have no other quality players. They instead put too much faith in McFadden’s health and Joseph Randle’s personal growth. They could have picked up their swing tackle in the later rounds on the draft.
