NFL Salute To Troops Scam Paying Jumbotron
Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

You know that warm feeling you get in your heart when you stand up before the start of a football game and put your right hand across your chest and thank our troops for their sacrifice? You remember how proudly you clap as we celebrate our soldiers, both serving and fallen, paying fond tribute before the kickoff of an NFL game? Well prepare for that feeling to freeze over and prepare for your heart to go numb.

The NFL seems so selfless and wholesome (especially for a former “Non-profit”) in how they honor our troops without asking for anything in return. Yet, through journalistic diligence, NJ.com found some of the NFL’s returns, and found out that many teams were being paid an enormous sum for granting time on their jumbotron.

According to NJ.com: The Department of Defense and the Jersey Guard paid the Jets a total of $377,000 from 2011 to 2014 for the salutes and other advertising, according to federal contracts. Overall, the Defense Department has paid 14 NFL teams $5.4 million during that time, of which $5.3 million was paid by the National Guard to 11 teams under similar contracts.

It isn’t all god-awful news, NJ.com would go on to report: Records show the Jets were not alone in contracting with the military. Other teams, such as the Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens, have also received money under similar agreements. No money has gone to the Giants or Eagles, records show.

Huh, I don’t ever recall the word ‘scam’ being part of the phrase “Honor and courage.”
