New England Patriots’ Excuse for Deflator Nickname is an Idiotic Rebuttal of Wells Report

The New England Patriots have finally spoken.

Just over a week after the NFL released the Wells report discussing the findings on the Deflategate investigation, the Patriots responded by releasing a 77-page rebuttal.

Reading through their response, to be fair, the Patriots make some good points about the Wells report and point out the holes Ted Wells and the NFL failed to explain.

However, the credibility of this entire rebuttal was shot with one sentence. As the Patriots refuted the report almost line by line, they reached the text messages that Jim McNally sent where he referred to himself as “the deflator.” The report includes a suspicious explanation of where the term “deflator” comes from:

Mr. Jastremski would sometimes work out and bulk up — he is a slender guy and his goal was to get to 200 pounds. Mr. McNally is a big fellow and had the opposite goal: to lose weight. “Deflate” was a term they used to refer to losing weight.

Are they serious? With these three sentences, the Patriots entire defense loses all credibility. They would have been better off ignoring the “deflator” aspect of the Wells report all together. To come up with this pathetic, flimsy reason that is a transparent attempt to fabricate an explanation to a nickname that has only one logical explanation — the man deflated footballs.

This excuse is clearly someone’s imagination running wild. It’s a completely false statement. If the Patriots are willing to lie in their rebuttal in this aspect, then why should we believe anything else in their report? In short, we shouldn’t. The entire report loses all of it’s credibility.

With that sentence, my confidence grows stronger that the Patriots are covering up the truth. When this appeal reaches an arbiter, he or she is going to see right through this weak excuse and this will come back to bite the Patriots. Maybe there’s hope that Tom Brady’s suspension will get reduced, but any chance  of it being eliminated is now over.

Tom Brady cheated, and the sooner the Patriots accept that and take their punishment, the better off they’ll be.
