5 Ways The Dallas Cowboys Can Still Improve Their Roster This Offseason

The Dallas Cowboys made leaps and bounds this offseason through the draft and free agency, improving the roster at seemingly every position but running back. The defense is much improved from last season by way of Byron Jones, Greg Hardy and Randy Gregory, but there are still moves to be made in Dallas. Here are a few ways the Cowboys can still improve the team this offseason, including an intriguing trade scenario.

There have been rumors flying around that Dallas is looking to trade for a running back after DallasCowboys.com's Bryan Broaddus shared the whispers. A few names to watch: Lamar Miller, Tre Mason and Matt Forte. The most intriguing of the three is Miller. The Dolphins could use help on the offensive line and Dallas has plenty of depth at the position, with Ronal Leary being a possible trade chip for the 24-year-old back.

You've heard it before and you'll hear it again: Brandon Carr's contract is far too expensive for the Cowboys' liking, and he likely needs to take a pay cut to remain with the team. Carr counts for .7 million against the cap in 2015, which is the third-most on the roster. If Dallas cuts him after June 1, they save million, but he's an important piece of the defense. The Cowboys are better with Carr on the roster, just not at .7 million.

Just like Brandon Carr, Dez Bryant needs a new contract -- and badly. The last thing Dallas wants is an unhappy Bryant going into the season with contract discussions becoming a distraction. Bryant has said he wants to be a Cowboy for life, and the team has to make it happen. Once Carr's situation is settled, I believe Bryant will get the deal he deserves.

No one should feel great heading into the season with Brandon Weeden as the team's backup quarterback. The game against Arizona in 2014 solidified that, with Weeden completing 54.5 percent of his passes with one touchdown and two picks. Matt Flynn is still on the market and could be brought in on a cheap contract to provide Weeden with some competition while Dustin Vaughn waits in the wings.

Dallas signed injury-prone Darren McFadden earlier in the offseason, but another free agent running back the Cowboys could look at is Pierre Thomas. He's not the youngest back at the age of 30, but he's solid in the passing game and could potentially line up as a kick returner as he did earlier in his career. Thomas won't be an every-down back, but he could join what will likely be a three-headed monster in the backfield.
