Houston Texans: 5 Veteran Free Agents Who Could Help Houston

The Texans have a solid roster already in place, but there are some positions that need a little upgrade. These positions are tight end, outside linebacker, offensive tackle, running back and wide receiver. Here are five veteran free agents who could step right in and produce at those positions at the right price.

The backup running back position is a major concern with Alfred Blue, Chris Polk and Kenny Hilliard backing up Arian Foster. Thomas can be a receiver out of the backfield and give the Texans a stop-gap until Blue, Polk or Hilliard develop.

Gresham is the best tight end in a weak free agent class, but given how poor the Texans' tight ends are, he would be considered an upgrade. Gresham had a good season in 2014 with 62 receptions and five touchdowns, but wasn't re-signed by Cincinnati.

With the recent release of Tyson Clabo, the Texans could use a veteran tackle to back up Duane Brown and Derek Newton. Collins is still a good player, but got stuck in the mess that was last year's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Houston's outside linebacker position is less than ideal with Whitney Mercilus and an injured Jadeveon Clowney. Freeney is one of the best pass rushers of all time, and could be a stop-gap at the position. He could also mentor Clowney and teach him how to be a professional.

Welker's concussion issues are preventing him from signing with a team, but a team that would make sense would be the Texans. He would be a low-risk, high-reward transaction who could step right in and produce. Welker has experience playing under Bill O'Brien and has previously worked with Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett in New England.
