This offseason, the San Francisco 49ers acquired Reggie Bush, a former Detroit Lions star. Bush is a seasoned veteran in the NFL, having spent 10 years in the game. This week, he sat down with 49ers Studio and weighed in on the 49ers’ offense. The insight into a mostly new 49ers team was positive and encouraging for fans of the franchise.

Bush said that while the 49ers are still learning a new system, they are working hard and are very focused. The 49ers’ new offensive system is to be implemented by new offensive coordinator Geep Chryst. After a decade in the NFL, Bush said that Chryst is one of the best OC’s he has ever worked under, even as the team is “still hacking away at this thing.”

It is unclear what exactly Bush meant by “this thing.” However, the 49ers have a lot of things to deal with the offseason, so the positive news from the inside is welcomed.

Bush also touched on his wishes to be placed on punt returns during his interview. He has four career punt return touchdowns, and not a single one of them came from his last home in Detroit. The 49ers have allowed Bush the opportunity to compete for this job, and he seemed appreciative of the opportunity and somewhat nostalgic. In fact, he talked about why punt returns and special teams were things he was pursuing with the 49ers, saying it gives him “another way to showcase my talents and help the team.”

The 49ers have not had a standout leader at punt returns for the last few seasons, so Bush lobbying for the job was likely a plus. The last few seasons have seen the 49ers ending many red-zone opportunities with field goals instead of converting for touchdowns, so if Bush can get them closer to the red zone in less time, or return the ball for points, it would give the team a great head start to utilize in an area that’s been an issue for them in the past.
