The San Francisco 49ers have a lot history with five Super Bowl titles and legendary players like Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Jerry Rice in their books. History was made once again for the team earlier this week when they hired the first-ever female athletic trainer in the NFL. Laura Schnettgoecke was hired by the 49ers as an assistant athletic trainer following the departure of Nate Breske.

Schnettgoecke spent six and a half years at the NCAA level with Texas Tech‘s women’s soccer team. Her resume also include a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and athletic training from Kansas State. While at KSU, she acted as a student trainer with both the rowing and football teams. The 49ers’ hiring of Schnettgoecke is a milestone for both the NFL and women alike. In a league that is mostly male-dominated, this move will pave the way for forward thinking.

While the NFL does not openly discuss gender equality, there is a sore lack of it within the sport. This move will not only make history, but it will open doors for many women that are just as well versed and knowledgeable in sports, but have not been given the proper chance to prove it.
