It’s been a long career for Oakland Raiders safety Charles Woodson, who is headed into his 17th season in the NFL. Still, despite his 38 years of age, the veteran cover man is set to play an integral role in the Raiders’ defense this upcoming season.

Since returning to Oakland in 2013 after a seven-year stint with the Green Bay Packers, Woodson has taken over as an outstanding veteran presence in the Raiders secondary. He’s taken young players under his wing, and provided leadership out on the field on Sundays.

The crazy part of Woodson’s situation, though, is that he’s still proving to be a dominant player. Although his speed and athleticism have been hindered by age, he’s making plays and ruling the Raiders secondary like he did in his first stint with the Silver and Black.

Last season, Woodson finished with a -3.9 rating based on ProFootballFocus’ scale. While that number certainly doesn’t paint a picture of a dominant player, his on-field production (113 total tackles, four interceptions) is certainly something the Raiders are more than happy with. The fact that they should continue to receive similar production in 2015 should be rather comforting as well.

Eventually, Woodson’s body will break down and the seasoned veteran will be forced to hang up his cleats. Until that happens, though, the Raiders will continue to enjoy the seemingly limitless athleticism and instincts that Woodson brings to the table.

Woodson is headed into his 18th season in the NFL, and the Raiders are still enjoying his star power. Expect the 2009 NFL Defensive Player of Year to shine just as bright this upcoming season as Oakland attempts a return to relevance.
