Every year after training camp, there are a lot of veteran players who are released. Often, the release of these veterans is expected, but sometimes there are a few surprises amongst the group. The Buffalo Bills will be an interesting team to watch because they have a new coach in Rex Ryan, and he may want to get rid of players who aren’t a long-term fit. Here are five Bills veterans who won’t make it through training camp.

5. Manny Lawson

Lawson has had a productive career, but there are some concerns with him. The first is that he is now 30 years old and is entering his 10th season in the league. The next is that he wasn’t all that productive last season playing behind Mario Williams and Jerry Hughes, only getting 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Finally, he is making just over $6 million over the next two seasons so he could be a cap casualty since he is just a backup.

4. Marcus Thigpen

The Bills added Percy Harvin this offseason and they also have Marquise Goodwin on their team. They are two quick receivers who excel in the return game. Thigpen likely will not be able to win a roster spot because his main value is on special teams, and the Bills have plenty of options in the return game. Plus, Thigpen doesn’t really have any value as a receiver or running back so he really is just taking up space on the team’s roster.

3. Bacarri Rambo

Even though Da’Norris Searcy left in free agency this past season, Bacarri Rambo is going to be hard-pressed to find a spot on the team. Corey Graham is converting to safety which will likely allow Duke Williams to stay as the primary backup for the team. Rambo is still a decent backup, but if he can’t prove that he can hold up in coverage, then he may have trouble finding a spot on the team.

2. Fred Jackson

The Bills have a crowded backfield featuring LeSean McCoy, Fred Jackson, Bryce Brown, Boobie Dixon and rookie Karlos Williams. Jackson is going to have a tough time winning the backup spot because the other players are younger and cheaper alternatives. He probably won’t end up making the team, so the Bills should look to trade him.

1. Chris Williams

Chris Williams has predictably been a bust signing for the Bills. The additions of Richie Incognito and John Miller have made Williams expendable, and given his bad contract the team may just want to cut their losses now. Williams played very poorly as a starter last season anyway, so why keep him around if he can’t be trusted to play well? He will be gone by Week 1, without a doubt.
