Something extremely unusual is going on with the San Francisco 49ers. The franchise was already having one of the worst offseasons in recent memory and they received some more terrible news on Friday afternoon. Anthony Davis, the team’s 25-year-old starting right tackle, has decided to retire from the NFL according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Davis wrote a statement on why he made the shocking decision to retire at such a young age:

“After a few years of thought, I’ve decided it will be best for me to take a year or so away from the NFL. This will be a time for me to allow my Brain and Body a chance to heal. I know many won’t understand my decision, that’s ok. I hope you too have the courage to live your life how you planned it when day dreaming to yourself growing up. Your Life is Your dream and you have the power to control that dream. I’m simply doing what’s best for my body as well as my mental health at this time in my life.”

This is the third unexpected retirement of the 49ers’ offseason. Possible future Hall of Fame middle linebacker Patrick Willis decided to call it quits at the age of 30 due to injury concerns. Not long after, Chris Borland, coming off a stellar rookie season, shocked the NFL world by retiring because of the (understandable) fear associated with head injuries in football.

The 49ers were certainly not prepared for Davis’ retirement. Alex Boone will likely be moved from right guard to right tackle, while Brandon Thomas, Daniel Kilgore, and Marcus Martin start at the three interior positions.
