Actions speak louder than words, and Brandon Spikes is learning that lesson after being released by the New England Patriots following yet another off-field incident.

Spikes has been taking every chance he gets to try to make it known he’s a changed man and was going to prove that to Bill Belichick during his reunion with the Patriots. Spikes’ automobile was found abandoned and damaged Sunday morning. After police reportedly connected the vehicle to an accident that sent three people to the hospital, the Patriots had no choice but to release the six-year veteran.

Spikes has looked great on the field this offseason and has said all the right things. His addition really gave the Patriots needed depth and physicality that made their linebacking corps one of the best units in the NFL. Now, both sides will have to reassess.

Spikes could face criminal charges, and if found guilty will be suspended by the NFL. The Patriots will have to look for someone to fill Spikes’ role. Whether that player is currently on the roster, a current free agent, or an addition after a veteran is cut during training camp is up to Belichick.

Spikes, 27, is still a relatively young player, and after this latest mess is cleared up, he will get another chance to catch on with another team. However, his limited skill set as a one or two-down run-stuffer, along with this latest baggage, will limit his suitors.

The one player who will should benefit most from Spikes’ release is veteran Dane Fletcher, who, like Spikes, rejoined the Patriots after playing 2014 elsewhere. Fletcher, 6-foot-2, 245 pounds, certainly isn’t the physical, tone-setting thumper that Spikes is, but he’s stout enough to play a bit in the base defense. Plus, he’s versatile enough to remain on the field in passing situations. Before the release, I figured Fletcher would battle for the role as third-down linebacker. Now, unless the Pats can add a veteran before the season, Fletcher seems like a near lock for a roster spot.

This latest incident is a disappointing end to an unlikely reunion. The finality of this relationship has Spikes’ future in doubt and leaves the Patriots more vulnerable on the field.
