Less than a month after re-signing with the New England Patriots, inside linebacker Brandon Spikes was released by the team on Monday morning. Spikes is part of an investigation for a hit-and-run incident involving a vehicle registered under his name.

Per a statement, Massachusetts State Police said they found a Mercedes Maybach abandoned in a median on Interstate-495 near the Patriots’ facilities in Foxborough. The car had significant damage to its front end and a represenative from OnStar told officers the driver had reported hitting a deer.

The incident occured around 3:30 a.m. ET on Sunday morning. Not long after, police were also called by a family in a different car who reported they were rear-ended by a vehicle in the same area where Spikes’ car was found. According to police, “no connection has yet been established,” and the investigation is still in progress.
Even though no charges have been filed against Spikes, the Patriots clearly don’t value him enough to wait this out. The team re-signed the former second-round pick to add depth to their linebacking corps that has been decimated by injuries. Spikes is a stout run defender, but struggles in coverage. The Patriots will likely sign another veteran linebacker to replace Spikes.
