The Dallas Cowboys made leaps and bounds this offseason, but there are still question marks on both sides of the ball. Key departures have left holes on offense and special teams, but there is still plenty of time between now and Week 1. Here are five questions that must be answered in training camp.

Heading into training camp next month, the Dallas Cowboys have a big quarterback question to answer, and it doesn't involve Tony Romo. The question of who will be his backup has to be answered. The battle will come down to Brandon Weeden and Dustin Vaughan, with the latter needing to prove his ability to lead an NFL team. If Vaughan looks strong in training camp, he'll likely get the call to move up to the No. 2 quarterback role.

Finding out where rookie defensive back Byron Jones will play isn't about his inability to to get on the field -- it's about his flexibility between playing safety or cornerback. So much of his positioning to start the season depends on other cornerbacks being on the roster and healthy. If Morris Claiborne is able to fully participate in training camp and is ready to go in Week 1, we could see Jones move back to free safety early on.

The simple answer to this question would seem to be Greg Hardy, but he'll be serving a fairly long suspension to start the season. Until he returns, likely after six to 10 games, the Cowboys have to figure out who will start opposite Demarcus Lawrence at defensive end. Jeremy Mincey, Randy Gregory, Ben Gardner and Jack Crawford will battle for the other starting spot until Hardy returns, making this a must-see competition in camp.

Dwayne Harris' impact on the field wasn't felt with the offense. It was felt on special teams, and the Cowboys are realizing that since his departure. Finding a new return specialist has become a priority this offseason, with guys like Cole Beasley, J.J. Wilcox and rookies Lucky Whitehead and Nick Harwell working in the return game. Beasley and Wilcox play big roles on offense and defense, which means a rookie could win the job.

The never-ending question of who will start at running back will hopefully be answered in Oxnard at training camp. Barring any trade or free agent being brought in, it'll likely come down to Darren McFadden and Joseph Randle. McFadden was brought in on a low-risk contract, far from guaranteeing himself a spot on this team. Randle will need to gain the team's trust on and off the field, and if he does so, he could emerge as the lead back.
